My winter essentials

I hate winter (apart from Christmas of course)! I hate miserable cold weather. I hate how it’s dark when I leave for work in the morning, and dark when I leave work at night. I’m not quite as cheery in winter and I hate how it affects my skin and how I often end up with a cold sore or two (evil things!).  However, this year I’ve created a list of things that get me through this horrible season – my winter survival kit. I thought I’d share here: Berocca – definitely ‘me on a good day’! It makes me…

Oscar’s first skiing lesson

Yesterday Oscar had his first skiing lesson. He had some money for his birthday and we broached the topic with him to see if he was keen and he was. I learnt to ski at the Snowdome in Tamworth about seven years ago, and getting the kids to learn at some point has always been in our plans. I was 24 when I learnt to ski and it took me a LONG time! I’m a bit of a scaredy cat, so it took me lots of lessons to finally get the hang of it. If I’m honest I think I…

Oscar is 5!

Yesterday was Oscar’s fifth birthday! I can’t believe it’s been five years since he was born! Why does time seem to speed up when you have kids? He had a great couple of days celebrating. He was at school on the actual day, so we had a party at a play centre in the Sunday, which was enjoyed by all! On his actual birthday, we ate pancakes and opened presents, before he went to school. He particularly loved his Flik Flak watch, remote controlled dinosaur and his Hot Wheels sets! After school, went to our local pub for a special…

New Years resolutions

I tend to keep my New Year resolutions realistic, to ensure I actually have a chance of achieving them. This year will be no exception. I thought I’d share them here, in the hope that writing them down and being able to refer back, will mean I don’t forget them when life gets in the way. So, here goes: 1. To run 500 miles by 31 Dec 2015. 2. To achieve a sub 1hr 10k personal best. 3. To be more focused at work – last year our extension was a huge distraction and now it’s done, I want to…

Oscar's first school nativity

Today was Oscar’s first school nativity play. He was an angel and he sang his heart out – bless him. I was super proud! And yes, there was the odd tear! It was a little disappointing the we couldn’t take photo’s during the production or of the whole cast, but that’s the world we live in today, which is sad.  It was a lovely morning and has made me feel super Christmassy! The twins are at nursery today and I’m working from home until 3pm. When I collect Oscar we’re going round to a friends for hot choc – yum!…

Not as stress free as planned!

So, a few weeks ago, I posted some tips for having a stress free Christmas, which I’d pledged to follow. Well it’s not quite going to plan! Life appears to be getting in the way of my plans! Our extension is now almost finished (full post and pics coming soon), but we’ve just had our ensuite refurbished and it’s taken longer than planned (doesn’t it always?!). We had our house valued last week by our mortgage company, so evenings were spent painting and general tidying to ensure it was at it’s best. This weekend, we had Simon’s work Christmas party on Friday…

Childrens' parties – a parental minefield

In our house it’s that time of year again…time to arrange the childrens’ birthday parties! Oscar’s birthday is the beginning of January and the twin’s is the beginning of Feb (great planning there!). Kids today appear to have a jam-packed calendar of parties to attend. I’m sure when I was younger my social calendar wasn’t that busy! The parties are much more lavish too. In fact as a parent it almost feels like a competition as to who can spend the most money. One that I refuse to compete in! When I was younger it was either a few friends…

Black Friday malarky!

Apparently today is ‘Black Friday’. And yes it is… in AMERICA! I just don’t understand why it is suddenly a thing here in the UK. Everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon and my twitter feed was full of Black Friday deals this morning. I remember when sale times were limited to January and July. Now every week there is some offer, sale or discount. It just seems to dilute the excitement. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love to get money off and I was extremely chuffed when I went to purchase the parka I’d been lusting after, to…

Christmas wishes

Getting in the Christmas spirit has had me thinking about the things I would like to receive from my loved ones. So, in the spirit of making things easier and less stressful, I’ve put together my wish list. Hopefully Simon will appreciate the helping hand..!   Whistles Duffy Satchel       I’m cheating a bit here as I know this has already been sent to Santa. I’d been lusting after it for ages and when Grazia ran a 25% off at Whistles promo, I managed to convince Simon that it was definitely worth getting. It looks like it’s…

Working mum guilt

As I’ve mentioned before I work a 28 hour week. Now this normally works well for us and provides the perfect balance. However, throw poorly kids into the mix and it all goes a little bit wrong. Say hello to guilt! Guilt that I’m not at work and missing important meetings when the child who I’ve had the day off to be with is running round like nothing was ever wrong, guilt when I go back to work wondering if they really are well enough for you to leave them, guilt that you’re not at home all the time. It’s…
